Looking back at Arms2D

Image
Well, my 15 minutes of fame have come and gone. The reception I've received to my fangame "Arms2d" has been nothing short of amazing. Now that things have settled back down, I think it's a great time to take a look back at the inspiring reception of "Arms2d". If you haven't already, you can check out my Arms2d Motivation post.   In that post I detail the ideas and motivation behind the inception and creation of Arms2d. It will hopefully give you a good idea of the mindset I had when releasing the game. So when I first released the game, what happened? After the initial announcement blog post, I share the game on Reddit in two separate places, r/Arms and r/NintendoSwitch. (Basically the same way I shared Splatoon2d). After making the two posts I anxiously sat and waited for comments. It a while, but eventually the comments came in, and a lot of them were positive! So I spent the rest of the day replying to comments and trying to help out anyone wit...

Arms2d is Finished

Image
Before you get any further, I'd appreciate it if you could take a look at this post detailing the motivation for Arms2d: Arms2d Motivation Without any further ado, here are some download links for Arms2d: [Windows Installer]   -  [Windows ZIP]   -  [HTML Web Build] So, what is Arms2d? Arms2d is a 2d fan demake of Nintendo's upcoming game, Arms (my fan game is not endorsed in any way by Nintendo) While Nintendo's game is a complex over-the-shoulder fighting game, my simple fan project is a free-for-all Super Smash Bros. style beat-em-up. What does Arms have that Arms2d doesn't have? Arms2d has one set of gloves - Arms has a bunch of different gloves that takes the strategy of the game to a whole new level Arms2d only has one stage - Arms has many unique stages Arms2d only has one game mode - Arms has quite a few really interesting game modes Arms2d doesn't have online multiplayer - Arms has online multiplayer with some really awesome features Ar...

New fan game beta: Arms2d

Image
//If you're in a hurry, here's a download link for the most recent beta: [Windows EXE version] [Windows Installer version] [Windows ZIP version] [HTML5 Web Version]  When you're finished, please fill out this short survey I've always enjoyed making fan games. In fact, one of my very first fully featured games was a DS homebrew project entitled "Link's Crossbow Training DS" . And just a short while back I developed the fan game "Splatoon2D" . As someone who doesn't have the skills to do impressive fan art or musical remixes, the best way for me to express my excitement and admiration for a game is to do what I know how to do: make a game. So I hope that this little fan creation I develop gets you excited for the real thing. And I hope you have some fun as you get even more hyped for the game. The premise of Arms is pretty simple, you battle with colorful and unique characters all with one very interesting similarity - they all h...

What I've been doing since my last blog post

Image
So, It's been a while since my last blog post. So here's a quick recap of what I've been doing since then. I created a neat little experimental project. I was hoping to try and turn it into an actual game, but it never got past the experimental phase: Codenamed: Flowall. It's neat, but not very fun  I got to see a tornado up close: A partially formed tornado I also made a game for a college project. I wasn't able to use Gamemaker, so it's not as good of a game as it could have been. I'm happy with the result though, you can download the game by clicking here: http://gamejolt.com/games/papercut/142267/download/build/324763 Papercut  After the spring college semester ended, I played with shaders to try and create some more neat visual effects: Based on the game "Valkyria Chronicles" And then I got back to working on what I was calling "My Western Game" Heading back to work  I continued to work on the game, sh...

A quick distraction game demo

Image
So, I got distracted while working on my main western game. I made this small game. Right now it's just a very simple maze game. I'd really like your opinions on how the game looks. So if you like it, let me know, if it hurts your eyes or looks stupid, let me know. This game has some soft flashing lights, so if you're sensitive to that stuff, just check the screenshots (I'll add an option to turn that off later) USE THE ARROW KEYS TO MOVE, PRESS X TO MARK YOUR PREVIOUS PATH USE SPACEBAR TO SWITCH BETWEEN WINDOWED AND FULLSCREEN Here's the link to the game: www.angelwirestudio.com/A'STARA.exe Thanks for stopping by, Josiah Jones, T.G.B.T.G.

Quick Update

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I've got a couple minutes, so I figured I'd write a quick post to give you an idea of what's been going on, and what will be going on throughout the rest of the year. My college classes and assignment over the last semester have taken a lot of energy from me. I'm not claiming that I don't have the time to work on my games due to college, but since I'm taking a lot of computer related classes, by the time I'm done with my college work, the last thing I want to do is work in front of a computer for several more hours. With that said though, I will try to do a much better job of working on my games and providing updates here on the blog and on my twitter account and facebook page throughout this next semester. With regards to my western game (currently titled "Wild Western") I'm working on implementing the non-playable characters and how they move around the world. I was initially going to plan out their eve...

Splatoon2d version 2 is ready to be played!

Image
Since a lot of people seemed to like the original Splatoon2d I made a while back, I've decided to update it. It includes some more maps, more game modes, 1 extra weapon and the ability to play as an octoling. If you didn't know, Splatoon2d is a top-down de-make of Nintendo's game "Splatoon". What is this exactly? Splatoon2D is a mere shell of what Nintendo's Splatoon is. Splatter ink everywhere to win. You can swim in your own ink. Hit the other person with ink and they have to respawn.

An update on the Splatoon2d update

Splatoon2d has gotten quite an incredible reception on the internet. Three websites did news posts about it ( Siliconera , Gamenesia , and GoNintendo ) and I've received over 10,000 hits on my blog post! I made the original Splatoon2d in only 3 days so there are quite a few unpolished edges and several things that I couldn't include due to time restraints. There have also been several requests for features that would make Splatoon2d into a much more well-rounded and entertaining experience. So here's a quick update on what I've been doing since I've released Splatoon2d and what I'd like to add:

Splatoon2D

Image
So, I don't know if you've heard or not, but Nintendo is releasing its colorful 3d shooter "Splatoon" around 15 hours from the time of this writing. If, like me, you're highly anticipating Splatoon's release, 15 hours is much too long. I have a solution. Play my version of Splatoon2D! 3 days ago I wanted to find a way to pass the time until Splatoon's release. So I figured I'd make my own version of Splatoon. What is this exactly? Splatoon2D is a mere shell of what Nintendo's Splatoon is. Splatter ink everywhere to win. You can swim in your own ink. Hit the other person with ink and they have to respawn.

Wild Western Tech Demo

It's been quite a while since I've posted here. But I've got some pretty exciting news! I've put together a tiny tech demo of Wild Western for you to download and play! READ THIS BEFORE PLAYING: This is a small tech demo. It does not reflect the whole product. It merely showcases a small portion of a MUCH larger game. Parts of the game may have been taken out to focus on one particular aspect. If you would like to find out about the what the entire scope of the game will be, message me using any of the methods on the contact page. AND THIS TOO: To view the customize options, enter the barber shop and activate the mirror. Use the arrow keys to select your options and press X to accept and Z to cancel. Not all characters have different sets of clothes, but they all have different hats, hair styles, and accessories. Leave a comment here if you see a combination of hats, hairstyles, or accessories that don't look right. There are a lot of different combinations...

General Update

I haven't posted any progress updates in a while - mainly because nothing exciting has happened in a while. Here's a quick recap of the past few months:    1.  A Sunset Runner has been released for the iOS app store. It turned out to be much more difficult to port games to iOS than I expected. After several weeks of struggling I somehow managed to upload it to the app store.    2.  None of my other games have been uploaded to the iOS app store. Gamemaker Studio and iOS just aren't getting along for me. I would love to see Partly Pop Can and Totem Pole Takedown on the iOS app store, but anytime I work on it I seem to get more trouble.    3.  I got back to working on Wild Western. The first thing I did was tear apart all the placeholder objects I used for the OVGE demo. Getting rid of that work was hard to do, but the systems I used in the demo weren't near good enough to be used in the final game. So there's what...

Sunset Runner now available for iOS!

After quite a bit of struggling with provisioning profiles, code sign errors, connection issues, and too much college homework, "A Sunset Runner" is now available to download from the iOS app store!!! Due to some technical "stuff" I had to rename the game's title to "A Sunset Runner". It's not a big deal, but I thought I'd just point it out. Here's the link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/a-sunset-runner/id939251001?ls=1&mt=8 You can also find it on the "Games" section of the website: www.angelwirestudio.com So yeah! Go give it a try, and let me know what you think! (It's free so there's no real risk) You can leave a comment here, or send me a shout on Facebook ( My personal account , The AngelWire Studio page , or the Sunset Runner Page ) or Twitter ( @William_j_iii ) Thanks for all the support I've been receiving. I'm not done porting my games to iOS yet, Partly Pop Can is next on the list, and I m...

Totem Pole Takedown Released!

Totem Pole Takedown is now available for free on Google Play and Amazon Apps for Android! Here's the Google Play link - Link Here's the Amazon link - Link Give it a try and tell me what you think! Be sure to let me know if you find any bugs or glitches. Thanks! I'll be working on the iOS version now, it may take several days to get it up on the App Store, I'll do my best to get it done soon. littlejoe, AngelWire Studio T.G.B.T.G.

Great News for iOS users! (and other news)

Image
I've recently invested in a mac and an iPhone. That means that I can now test and publish games for iOS devices! Within the next few weeks I'll be porting my previous android releases! (Partly Pop Can (both versions) Sunset Runner, and Sunset Showdown) And the other news, my next game will be released on the Google Play store and Amazon Apps store within the next few days!! (iOS version will come a few days later) "Totem Pole Takedown" will soon take the world by storm. It's a standard destroy blocks to match colors game, but with a clever twist, instead of many rows and columns, there's just one column. Here's a screenshot- It's a scaled down a lot here, the game itself will run at 1600x2050! That's all for now, just a quick reminder, if you haven't liked the AngelWire Studio Facebook page , you really should. Due to the much more informal nature of the Facebook page , I update that much more frequently than I do this blog. (I actually ...

OVGE Recap

I just now realized I haven't update the blog with details about how OVGE went.  Shame on me!  A lot happened so I've got a lot to talk about, but I'll try to keep it brief.

OVGE coming up soon!

Back in the middle of June I announced that I'd be showing off Wild Western at this years Oklahoma Video Game Exhibition. (OVGE - www.OVGE.com)  Time has really flown by since then; And now we're just 8 days away from go time on August 9th. The procrastinator in me is scared I won't be ready in time, the shy part of me is terrified about having to actually talk to people, but the game developer in me is incredibly excited about showing off my work and getting to meet new people with the same love of video games that I have.      Something I don't think I've mentioned is that I'll also be showing off Volcosis and Partly Pop Can at the show as well.  They're both games that I think have a lot of potential that they couldn't quite tap into.      So I guess the reason I made this post is to say: "Yes!! OVGE is almost here!" and to say: "Oh no!! OVGE is almost here! I need to hurry up and get back to work!!!!". ...

Wild Western Update

I've been pretty busy with Wild Western for a while now.  I've got a couple pieces of great news to share, so click "read more" to see what's going on!

Success

This past Wednesday the pastor at my Church talked about success in life.  A couple of his tips to achieve success stuck with me.  The first is to determine where you are now.  The second is to determine exactly what success looks like. So I'm going to do that in this blog post. First I'll take a look at past success that have gotten me where I'm at now. Volcosis has over 1000 downloads and the Youtube trailer has 1,800 views.  There was an article written about it on IndieGames.com - http://indiegames.com/2013/07/freeware_pick_volcosis_a_new_p.html  And it was pretty well accepted.  A cool thing about the game is that I was able to get permission from my favorite vocaloid artist, Monaca:Factory, to use the song "Flash" for the credits. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lxTGXfRGoM&feature=kp I've design a couple banners for Nintendo-Okie.com and I was invited to be a guest on the Nintendo Okie Podcast to talk about some Wii remote designs I...

2d Gameboy style artist wanted

Image
I've come to the realization that Wild Western may be a bit too much for me to handle all by myself.  So I've decided to find an artist (or 2, or 3) to work with who can do some of the many buildings, characters, and other random stuff. If you're an artist and would like to be a part of this ambitious project, "Read more" for details.
