Arms2d is Finished

Image
Before you get any further, I'd appreciate it if you could take a look at this post detailing the motivation for Arms2d: Arms2d Motivation Without any further ado, here are some download links for Arms2d: [Windows Installer]   -  [Windows ZIP]   -  [HTML Web Build] So, what is Arms2d? Arms2d is a 2d fan demake of Nintendo's upcoming game, Arms (my fan game is not endorsed in any way by Nintendo) While Nintendo's game is a complex over-the-shoulder fighting game, my simple fan project is a free-for-all Super Smash Bros. style beat-em-up. What does Arms have that Arms2d doesn't have? Arms2d has one set of gloves - Arms has a bunch of different gloves that takes the strategy of the game to a whole new level Arms2d only has one stage - Arms has many unique stages Arms2d only has one game mode - Arms has quite a few really interesting game modes Arms2d doesn't have online multiplayer - Arms has online multiplayer with some really awesome features Ar...

New fan game beta: Arms2d

Image
//If you're in a hurry, here's a download link for the most recent beta: [Windows EXE version] [Windows Installer version] [Windows ZIP version] [HTML5 Web Version]  When you're finished, please fill out this short survey I've always enjoyed making fan games. In fact, one of my very first fully featured games was a DS homebrew project entitled "Link's Crossbow Training DS" . And just a short while back I developed the fan game "Splatoon2D" . As someone who doesn't have the skills to do impressive fan art or musical remixes, the best way for me to express my excitement and admiration for a game is to do what I know how to do: make a game. So I hope that this little fan creation I develop gets you excited for the real thing. And I hope you have some fun as you get even more hyped for the game. The premise of Arms is pretty simple, you battle with colorful and unique characters all with one very interesting similarity - they all h...

What I've been doing since my last blog post

Image
So, It's been a while since my last blog post. So here's a quick recap of what I've been doing since then. I created a neat little experimental project. I was hoping to try and turn it into an actual game, but it never got past the experimental phase: Codenamed: Flowall. It's neat, but not very fun  I got to see a tornado up close: A partially formed tornado I also made a game for a college project. I wasn't able to use Gamemaker, so it's not as good of a game as it could have been. I'm happy with the result though, you can download the game by clicking here: http://gamejolt.com/games/papercut/142267/download/build/324763 Papercut  After the spring college semester ended, I played with shaders to try and create some more neat visual effects: Based on the game "Valkyria Chronicles" And then I got back to working on what I was calling "My Western Game" Heading back to work  I continued to work on the game, sh...

Splatoon2d version 2 is ready to be played!

Image
Since a lot of people seemed to like the original Splatoon2d I made a while back, I've decided to update it. It includes some more maps, more game modes, 1 extra weapon and the ability to play as an octoling. If you didn't know, Splatoon2d is a top-down de-make of Nintendo's game "Splatoon". What is this exactly? Splatoon2D is a mere shell of what Nintendo's Splatoon is. Splatter ink everywhere to win. You can swim in your own ink. Hit the other person with ink and they have to respawn.

An update on the Splatoon2d update

Splatoon2d has gotten quite an incredible reception on the internet. Three websites did news posts about it ( Siliconera , Gamenesia , and GoNintendo ) and I've received over 10,000 hits on my blog post! I made the original Splatoon2d in only 3 days so there are quite a few unpolished edges and several things that I couldn't include due to time restraints. There have also been several requests for features that would make Splatoon2d into a much more well-rounded and entertaining experience. So here's a quick update on what I've been doing since I've released Splatoon2d and what I'd like to add:

Splatoon2D

Image
So, I don't know if you've heard or not, but Nintendo is releasing its colorful 3d shooter "Splatoon" around 15 hours from the time of this writing. If, like me, you're highly anticipating Splatoon's release, 15 hours is much too long. I have a solution. Play my version of Splatoon2D! 3 days ago I wanted to find a way to pass the time until Splatoon's release. So I figured I'd make my own version of Splatoon. What is this exactly? Splatoon2D is a mere shell of what Nintendo's Splatoon is. Splatter ink everywhere to win. You can swim in your own ink. Hit the other person with ink and they have to respawn.

2d Gameboy style artist wanted

Image
I've come to the realization that Wild Western may be a bit too much for me to handle all by myself.  So I've decided to find an artist (or 2, or 3) to work with who can do some of the many buildings, characters, and other random stuff. If you're an artist and would like to be a part of this ambitious project, "Read more" for details.

Introducing "Wild Western"

Image
In honor of the Game Boy's 25th anniversary, I'm excited to introduce to you my current project, "Wild Western".      Wild Western is a post-apocalyptic Game Boy style retro western RPG. (how's that for an elevator pitch?)      Humanity has been nearly wiped by a mysterious set of circumstances.  And the survivors have been forced to take refuge underground.  After years of adjustment, the townsfolk have finally settled in, and have now started life anew.  But soon, series of events will take place that could threaten the last of humanity.  It's up to you to stop those events and unravel who's behind it all.      You can choose to play as one of four main characters:    -A rugged mysterious cowboy    -A grown boy trying to learn what it takes to be a man    -The despised entrepreneurial businesswoman who practically owns the town    ...

Candy & Crunch - a game for the #candyjam

Image
I heard about the candyjam through twitter and I thought it would be fun to participate.  For anyone that doesn't have a clue what a "candyjam" is, I'll explain it.  The popular game company King.com has filed a trademark for the word "candy" as well as a few other common words.  The purpose of the game jam is to make a game themed around candy, with the word in the title, in protest.  So that is what I have done.  I present to you "Candy & Crunch":

Wild Western

This is a just a small side project I've worked on the last couple of days, it's called "Wild Western". It's a western game with the graphical style of the old Game boy. Introducing "Partly Pop Can"

Image
Partly Pop Can is a game currently in development for Android and PC. After some experimental goop is spilled into a pop can, the pop can comes alive. Bounce, fly, soar, and shoot your way through the laboratory.  Collect the small green beakers while avoiding Professor Glob's deadly traps. This will be my first attempt at making a game for Android.  It will also be my first game I sell.  Up until now my games have all been free to play.  I still haven't figured out the pricing scheme, but it will definitely be as affordable as I can possibly make it while still being able to make a little bit of money. There's also going to be a huge level of customization.  Right now there are 30 different hats, 17 different accessories, and 10 different suits.  Making over 6000 unique ways you can customize your pop can.  There are all sorts of crazy, cool, cute, and classy combinations.  Here are just a few: I'm hoping to release a demo very...

Volcosis Release Date

On January 26th, 2012 I began working on a game.  I had the idea to make a platforming game where the player wasn't just limited to 2 planes of movement.  But I didn't want the player to be confined to the standard 3d platforming genre either.  So I began working on a game where the player could dynamically switch between 2d platforming and 3d platforming.  I began calling the game "Glue"(just the first random name that popped into my head).  After some work on the prototype I realized that I would need to try again.  The prototype was filled with bugs and glitches.  So I started working on a 2d platforming engine.  Once I finished, I began implementing the switching component.  It was awesome.  So I continued working until I felt it was ready to show to the world.  Click read more to continue reading...

EchoLocation

So I've been wanting to make a game using HTML5 for a while now.  I've been dabbling here and there trying out Javascript but never got anywhere.  But now, I think I've finally gotten the hang of HTML5 and JavaScript.  So I made this small game in my spare time: "EchoLocation".  I wanted to try the idea of dodging invisible obstacles.  It may seem weird but I think I kind of made it work.  You play as a dolphin swimming through the dark ocean.  You cannot see the obstacles.  So to determine the location of the obstacles you need to emit a sound wave that will bounce off the objects.  It's not quite finished yet and I don't know when I'll find the time to finish it. To play the game go to:http://gamejolt.com/games/arcade/echolocation/14769/ TGBTG, littlejoe

Hacking 101

Image
Indiegamemag.com is holding a week long game development competition.  I decided to take a quick break from Volcosis and make a short little game.  The theme for the competition is "cliches".  So I decided to base my game around the tv cliche where all someone has to do to hack into a computer is pound away at the keyboard.

Another progress update

Image
It's been a while since my last progress update; and even though nothing terribly exciting has happened I decided to write this small update.
